This machine is a replacement for one that was 49 years old. It is much lighter and has a multitude of additional functions that I am looking forward to using, such as sewing on buttons, automated buttonhole stitching and self-threading needle. The basic functions are familiar, with minor differences for loading the thread. The instruction booklet is very clear and helpful, and the threading process is numbered on the machine. I love being able to watch the bobbin thread being caught by the upper thread! Another plus is the integrated box for storage, large enough for all my bobbins, needles and tools. I have used my new machine and found it very quiet, responsive and easy to manage.

Only tested sewing a straight line as just unboxed it. Found the needle threader a bit difficult to use but I’ve problems with fiddly stuff with my fingers because of a chronic illness , but after a few try’s I’d finally managed it. The threading the rest of the machine was very easy, so was threading a bobbin. My last machine was about 20 years old and had difficulty with controlling the speed. Chose this machine because of the speed control, for the use without a foot pedal. So far I’m really am impressed and hoping it will make sewing much easier. It’s definitely much lighter than my old singer. My only negative comment is I wish it had come with a handbook, instead of just the quick start up guide, thankfully I can go online and hopefully print one off.

I am well pleased with this machine. I have had a singer for 40+ years utill I made smoke out of it, my fault. Replacing it was a hard choice but the new machine is easy to use and if it was only on the third day I found the thread cutter, I have to say its in a much better place. The storage space in the machine itself which replaces the little cardboard box is excellent as is the threading of the needle and the spool. If I still reach to the middle of the dial for backwards stitching, I am starting to realise that the new position is much more convenient and have no doubt I will soon be used to it I am well pleased with its performance and having the manual on my computer helps. Its lighter but still seems robust. I certainly would recommend it.

We bought the Singer sewing machine as a gift for my wife (who did not want a new machine) and she is now head over heels in love with it.. Apparently the best machine she has owned. Many Brownie points earned Thank you Mr Singer

Trying to make hatch covers for a boat with my 50 year old machine was the last straw. When I saw the excellent Which? reviews I bought a 4423 immediately. It has coped with several layers of canvas & the walking foot has been great for seaming two different fabrics. The top loading bobbin is great (though not accessible when using the walking foot) and I'm getting the hang of the needle threader. A printed manual would have been appreciated - though if you sewed before, most of the workings are intuitive. Excellent machine.

This machine was purchased to be able to sew home furnishing products and sew thicker materials. It is a great budget portable solution vs an industrial machine.
