This was purchased as my first machine as a birthday present, and I find it really easy to use. I too agree that a heavier cover would be better for storage purposes. The 6038 is easy to use and the instruction book is clear and easy to follow. I would recommend this as a first machine to anyone.

I sew for a living and have finally run my old faithful 20+year old singers to death. I wanted a heavy, solid machine with just the basic stitches and the 6038 seems to fit the bill, with a few add ons. I like the disengage switch on the handwheel for bobbin winding, the decorative stretch stitches and the one step button hole function which seems to work best on heavier fabric. My one complaint so far is that the curved shape below the flat bed means the machine tilts if you apply too much pressure feeding fabric through. It will be used constantly and time will tell if it is up to the job.
I did phone for advice and must say I am very satisfied with the level of service from this site.

I recently purchased a new singer, having had a singer purchased for me when I was 15 years old. I am now 56yrs old. I have ummmed and arred over buying a new machine for the past few years...my old machine finally gave up the fight, so I was forced to buy another, and I am so glad I have bought the 6038, what a machine!!!, this machine is the bees knees, and I would recommend this machine to anyone in any doubt about buying a sewing machine.

I like the machine a lot, the only problem i have is my bobbin case was missing and i don't know where to buy it, it cannot be easily ordered from the internet as it seems some of the stores don't have the parts.

im 16 and i find this machine grate! im am studing textiles at collage and it does every thing i will need and more in one machine! its got clear and easy to understand instructions, loads of pratical and fun stitches (even does buttons and holes!), i think is grate value for money, light wieght and even looks funnky. what more could you want?! i know its sad but i think i might have fallen in love with it!

After some research I purchased the 6038 to replace my 30 year old Pfaff. I have found it excellent value for money and after some figuering out have found it very good and easy to use. However after 30 years I thought some of the features on my old Pfaff would have been included i.e. Automatic needle lift when you lift the Presser Foot disengaging leaver. Also I miss the 'Dual Feed'option on my old machine. Both these features are very simple and I would not have thought after 30 years would have been standard on most machines. The 'Thread cutter is not the in the most convenient position. The instruction book could be improved with an index to save having to flick through the book to find instructions for 'Threading the machine' 'Blind hem stiching' etc. Also it would be helpful if the instructions for each function included diagrams of the 'Switch width leaver' and 'Stich length dial'. A list of 'Part Numbers' for replacement items such as Bobbins and lights would be helpful.The cover is a joke. The one that came with my maching was such a tight fit and so flimsy that my finger went through it when I first tried to put it on. However, I am very pleased with my new 6038 sewing machine and would recommend it as a good value machine for soneone who wants a machine that will do all the basic things.

It is a great little machine that I would recommend to any novice or expert. I have waited for years to own my own rather than reluctantly borrow my mums! It has been worth the wait. I have played with the stitches and found the instruction book easy to follow, until I tried button holes. Still got that to achieve but with practice I'm sure I will get there. It is disappointing that it doesn't have a hard cover (like mums), but I will just have fun creating a new one on my machine!

quality is good,features are good except thread cutter which is not very usefull because i cannot cut the thread from the edge of the fabric.the very first day the light bulb got burned while i was filling the bobin.i could not find the same bulb from anywhere.
looks like a dolphin.its beautifull.instruction book is incorrect in some areas.easy to use and easy to carry.i dont understand stich options. eg:every letter has two type of stiches but one doesent function.that is a minus point since i dont understand.

The quality, features, looks, packaging, instruction book, ease of use stitch options and time saving qualities are all excellent.
I have upgraded from a very ancient family heirloom Singer tredle machine (which still works perfectly). It is wonderful to discover all the modern features available and is very easy to use once I got used to threading my new machine. I particularly love the automatic needle threader which saves struggling!

It is just what I wanted - an up to date version of my old Singer machine - with some improvements but everything is in about the same place and works in the same way! The only thing I would have liked better would have been a hard case for it, but I can understand how that couldn't be done for the price.

This certainly is an easy machine to use with plenty of options and stitches to explore. I couldn?t locate the thread cutter without searching through the instruction book and even now I found it hard to use, while I like the needle threading gizmo it appears quite flimsy, This machine was purchased as my first sewing machine having previously only ever used my mothers, while it had some knockers on the various web-sites mostly from those who appeared more experienced then I, I felt that it would be a reasonably priced, moderately spec?ed machine suitable for my use and experience. I have found that the machine has lived up to those expectations and I?m happy with my choice. The only major disadvantage is that I could do with a good hard secure cover to allow storage within a cupboard and away from the interested hands of ?little people?
